The guys have it easy, that’s all there is to it. Being a surfer girl is no easy task to endure. Just as there are other sports that are geared to the guy, the physical sport of surfing is yet another choice that is geared towards the male gender. In some cases, it is even hard to get surfing recognition. No more! Today, there are plenty of surf schools, surf camps, and even surfing girl spas that can lead us down the path of pretty awesome skills. That said, women have the right to brag about what they have accomplished here.

For example, consider why it is just a feat for women to accomplish something this complex. The male body is designed for power with muscle building ability much unlike the women’s. Yet, how many guys make the most of this? In surfing, a strong, lean and flexible body is an absolute must. It takes quite a bit of work for the surfing girl to build up her body to this level, much more than for the guy.

What’s more is that this was once nothing more than the guy’s sport. Through time and a bit of need, there are now countless heats designed specifically for the woman surfer. They are just as competitive and just as awesome. Women are out there, competing and hitting the big waves with perfection, something that just was not done before this.

Consider the names of those world champs out there like Claire Bevilacqua, Kassia Meador, Holly Beck and Kim Mayer. These women have set the extreme sport of surfing into something that women can do to the best level.

If you are new to the sport of surfing or looking for a way in, then take note of the fact that these women are out there, making waves and having a great time doing it. What’s more is that with so many opportunities like awesome surf camps designed to teach just women to surf, there is no doubt that more women will be out there in the line up.

So, do you think you have the right to brag? With a body that limits the power that can be had and a world dominated by men, when a woman wins the world championships (or even if she just gets out there and tries) it is definitely right to brag about doing it.

Philippines surfing is not quite a destination that would conjure up images of brilliant surfing breaks. The better and more consistent surf is during the north east monsoon or the amihan, during November to April. The typhoons usually come in from the east of Mindanao and head in a north westerly direction hitting the southern Luzon and the islands between Luzon and the Pacific.

The west coast of the Philippines is more inconsistent than the east coast, it relies on the winds through the Taiwan Straights during the north east monsoon. This wind created swell hits the west coast of Luzon. The swell can also be really good when the odd typhoon heads towards Hong Kong. The swell that hits Palawan can be hard to pick, but you are guaranteed to have fantastic waves if you leave your surf board at home, typically if you bring it the surf will be flat!

So when is the best time to go surfing in the Philippines? Well your best to try the east coast during the north east monsoon. But like everywhere surfing the Philippines is inconsistent, however on it’s good day, totally unforgettable.

Surfing History

In the early 1900’s the Hawaiians organized the Hui Nalu (surf club) and competed in neighborly surf competitions with the Outrigger Canoe Club. This drew a great deal of attention to the Waikiki surf shore, bringing a revitalized interest in the sport, which had fallen out of favor in the late 1800s. Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic star in swimming, popularized the sport further by traveling internationally and showing off his surfing style to thrilled audiences around the world. He was favored by Hollywood elite; having acted in bit parts in films and was always recruiting new surfers wherever he went. He is credited with surfing the longest wave of all time in 1917, in the popular surfing area now called Outside Castles in Waikiki. His 1000 meters plus wave record has yet to be overtaken.

In the 1930s, the sport of surfing was experiencing a Renaissance. Tom Blake, founder of the Pacific Coast Surf Championships that ended with the onset of war in 1941, was the first man to photograph surfing from the water. Another photographer and surfer named Doc Ball published California Surfriders 1946, which depicts the pristine coastal beaches and good-time, relaxed atmosphere of surf living. Surfing, although curtailed in the aftermath of WWII, revived as always by the 1950s. Bud Browne, an accomplished surfer and waterman, created the first ‘surf movie’ with his 1953 “Hawaiian Surfing Movie”. This inspired many photographers, filmmakers and surfers to continue documenting the sport, culminating with is arguably the best surf movie of all time, 1963’s “Endless Summer” by Bruce Brown. The film opened up the genre of the surf movie and the art of surfing to non-surfing people, accumulating fans and inspiring neophytes.

Although surfing was a male-dominated sport, adventurous women surfers can be seen all the way back to the times of the Polynesian Queens. Two notable ‘surfer girls’ were Eve Fletcher and Anona Napolean. Eve Fletcher was a California-born animator for Walt Disney and Anona Napolean was the daughter of a respected Hawaiian surfing family. The two pioneered the sport for modern women, winning surfing competitions up and down the California coast at the end of the 50s and into the 60s. Hollywood was quick to be on the scene and with the 1959 film “Gidget”, surfing was flung far out into the mainstream, never to return to its humble, ritualistic beginnings. “Gidget” inspired a slew of “Beach Blanket Bingo” movies that brought surfing to a new generation of teens and inspiring a new genre of ‘surf music’ that accompanied films and made The Beach Boys more famous than Elvis in the 60s.

Surfing spread throughout all media and Surfing Magazine was born in the early 1960s by famous surf photographer, LeRoy Grannis. After that, other publications cropped up bringing more information on the sport, equipment and stars of the surfing scene. John Severson, an accomplished filmmaker and photographer, created Surfer Magazine, originally called “The Surfer”. These publications brought advertising, professional surfing, surf culture and publicity to the now very popularized sport.
